Photo- Liberty Jail

While the Mormon settlers were being driven from Missouri, Joseph Smith was being held in this jail in Liberty, Missouri. From December 1838 to April 1839 Smith, along with five followers were held in the lower level of the jail.

Earlier, the men had surrendered at the demand of a mob who had threatened more violence if they were not given up.

In April, while being transferred to another jail, the men were allowed to escape by a guard. This allowed them to meet up with the rest of the church in Nauvoo, Illinois
